Dr. David Kimhy is a clinical psychologist and an expert on cognitive-behavioral therapy for psychosis (CBTp). He has more than 20 years of academic research and clinical experience developing and testing cognitive and behavioral treatments for people with psychosis.

 

Dr. Kimhy completed a 3-year NIMH-funded (T32) postdoctoral fellowship in schizophrenia research in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. Following his postdoctoral training, he joined the department’s faculty where he served for 10 years. During this period, he also served as a Beck Institute Scholar at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, where he completed advanced CBTp training. In 2018, Dr. Kimhy joined the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai where he served for 8 years as a tenured Associate Professor, the Program Leader for New Interventions in Schizophrenia, and the Director of the Experimental Psychopathology Laboratory.

Over his career as a clinical researcher, Dr. Kimhy was a recipient of multiple research grants focusing on the treatment of psychosis, psychosis risk, schizophrenia, and suicide totaling $53.5 million ($8.8 million as a lead investigator and $44.7 million as a co-investigator), including grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the Department of Veteran Affairs, The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, along with private and institutional funding. He has led and co-led multiple randomized clinical trials focusing on the use of cognitive and behavioral interventions and technology-based approaches (e.g., digital mobile health, telehealth) in the study, assessment, and treatment of psychosis.

 

This work resulted in the publication of more than 85 peer-reviewed research articles, book chapters, and books focusing on psychosis and schizophrenia, including serving as a co-editor of "Psychosocial Approaches to Negative Symptoms in Psychosis (Oxford University Press; available for purchase at Amazon), the first book focusing on psychosocial approaches to the assessment and treatment of negative symptoms, recognized as some the most debilitating and challenging-to-treat aspects of psychotic disorders (see Link for a list of published peer-reviewed research articles). Dr. Kimhy’s work has been featured by NBC News, Scientific American, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Reuters Health, U.S. News & World Report, ABC News, Yahoo News, Reddit, ReachMD, and others (see selected list of publications In the Media). 

 

 Dr. Kimhy is a licensed clinical psychologist in New Jersey (#35SI00781000) and New York (#016273) and has a PSYPACT® Authorization to Practice Inter-jurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT; #22381).
